Lack of Innovation
There are many factors that contribute to a slowdown in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity, but the lack of innovation in technology is an especially major factor, according to a recent report from PwC and Frost & Sullivan. According to the report, the lack of technology innovation is leading to companies having to spend more time and money on technology investments. That means there is less time and money left over for other activities that might lead to a merger or acquisition. This also means that any new technology investments made will only improve efficiency and drive costs down.
Poor Management Skills
The main reason why M&A deals fail to be completed is due to poor management skills. The majority of M&A deal failures are due to poor management skills in both buyer and seller teams. Lack of a clear understanding of the business model, strategy, and goals of the company are among the reasons.
According to a study by the Center for Creative Leadership, fewer companies are willing to pay the premium for a merger deal because of the low quality of senior leadership. One of the key reasons is that leaders are not being trained to manage themselves. They have become complacent and are unwilling to make the necessary adjustments needed to achieve long-term goals.
Increase in Global Competition
As competition has increased, companies have become increasingly willing to spend money on acquiring companies to gain access to new markets and technology. Over the last five years, M&A (mergers and acquisitions) activity has decreased significantly in the U.S. However, worldwide, merger and acquisition activity is on the rise, especially in Europe and Asia, according to the 2015 deal flow tracker report by advisory firm KPMG. This shift is partly attributed to a slowdown in investment bank deal activity, but also to a decrease in merger and acquisition activity in the U.S.
The combination of a slowdown in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) deals in the US and the continued decline in global M&A activity means that competition is getting increasingly fierce. With a decline in new product development and a decline in innovation, many industries have fewer choices than ever before, leaving customers feeling frustrated, and looking for alternatives.
The Rise of New Technology
The rise of new technology has forced many companies to slow down or even stop their M&A activities. Most buyers who are now facing tough competition and lower profit margins are reluctant to spend a huge amount of money on purchasing new technologies.
We live in a world of new technology. When it comes to mergers and acquisitions, the landscape has changed. For one, the rise of technology is taking away jobs from traditional industries. A recent study done by McKinsey Global Institute found that almost half of the current U.S. workforce will have a high probability of being replaced by artificial intelligence and robotics in the next two decades.
Technology has become a huge disruptor of the traditional business model. In addition, the decline in economic growth is impacting the industry. Many of the top deals in the past three years have failed to close because the buyers were unable to secure the financing needed. Even among companies that were able to raise capital, a third of the deals fell apart.
The slowdown has not only affected mergers and acquisitions, but also the private equity industry. Some of the reasons behind the slowdown include low-interest rates and high debt levels in the economy. However, the overall economic health of the US is also a key factor in determining whether the merger-and-acquisition sector will grow or shrink.
